Artist Statment
- A holly tree against the mottled old wall, with red fruits in full bloom, brings out the tenacity and hope of life.
A judge has to inevitably face the struggle of making life-and-death decisions, and I do everything possible to find a way out for the defendant. But in some cases, as described by Song Dynasty statesman Ouyang Xiu: “This is a case of a capital crime. If I had done my utmost to find a way to save the criminal’s life but failed, both of us would leave no regrets.” With all circumstances considered, the defendant’s crime was so grave that it can only be justified by depriving him of his life. I can only sigh profusely, and pen the judgment that returns him to the embrace of God.
